Overview

This nine-day helicopter-based pilgrimage to Mount Kailash has been designed for devotees who wish to experience the sanctity of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in a shorter yet spiritually complete format. The route allows pilgrims to approach these revered destinations closely while maintaining a balanced flow between travel, acclimatization, and spiritual engagement, making it one of the most sought-after ways to undertake the Kailash Yatra.

Throughout the journey, travelers witness a dramatic transformation of landscapes. The route passes through rolling hills and deep valleys before opening up to expansive mountain vistas that include some of the highest peaks in the world. A key highlight of this pilgrimage is the sequence of aerial journeys—first by fixed-wing aircraft from Nepalgunj to Simikot, followed by a helicopter flight to Hilsa. These flights offer rare panoramic views, showcasing a striking contrast between low-altitude plains and the rugged Himalayan terrain, eventually rising to the vast, high-altitude Tibetan plateau.

After entering Tibet, the journey continues by road through wide-open landscapes and remote highland regions toward the Mount Kailash area. The pilgrimage reaches its spiritual culmination with the sacred circumambulation of Mount Kailash, a deeply symbolic and physically demanding trek. Pilgrims cross the revered Dolma-La Pass, situated at an altitude of approximately 5,610 meters, retracing a path walked by countless devotees over centuries. This final segment represents both a spiritual and personal milestone, bringing the journey to a profound and meaningful conclusion.

Upon arrival in Lucknow, pilgrims will be greeted by our coordinating team and briefed about the initial leg of the journey. The group then proceeds by road toward Nepalgunj, covering approximately 200 kilometers and completing the necessary border formalities en route. This drive marks the beginning of the yatra, transitioning from urban surroundings into a more relaxed travel rhythm.

After reaching Nepalgunj, pilgrims are escorted to the hotel where a warm reception awaits. The remainder of the evening is kept free to allow participants to unwind after the journey, organize personal belongings, and mentally prepare for the days ahead. This initial rest period is important for setting a comfortable pace for the upcoming high-altitude travel.

Distance Approximately 45–50 minutes by flight
Altitude Around 2,910 meters above sea level
Climate Mild to warm daytime temperatures ranging between 16–30°C
Stay Shared accommodation with common bathroom facilities (Bijay Hotel or similar)

The day begins early with a transfer to the airport for the onward journey to Simikot. Pilgrims board a small aircraft for a memorable mountain flight, offering aerial views of deep valleys, winding rivers, and progressively rising Himalayan terrain. As the aircraft approaches Simikot, the dramatic shift from lowland geography to high-altitude mountain regions becomes clearly visible.

Simikot is a remote Himalayan town that can only be accessed by air, making this segment a significant highlight of the journey. Upon arrival, the day is intentionally kept light to allow the body to begin adjusting to the increased altitude. Pilgrims may take short walks around the local area, observe village life, or rest at the accommodation as part of the acclimatization process. Proper rest and hydration are encouraged throughout the day.

Distance Approximately 25 minutes by helicopter | Short 10-minute walk to cross the border | About 30 km drive by jeep
Altitude Around 3,900 meters above sea level
Climate Windy with cold temperatures
Stay Triple-sharing accommodation with attached bathroom (Hotel Himalaya or similar)

After breakfast, pilgrims proceed for an exciting helicopter flight to Hilsa, a small settlement located at the Nepal–Tibet border. This short yet memorable flight offers striking aerial views of deep gorges, snow-lined ridges, and rugged Himalayan terrain. Upon landing at Hilsa, all group members assemble before completing border formalities on foot and officially entering Tibetan territory.

Once across the border, pilgrims are welcomed by the Tibetan and Nepali ground team. The journey then continues by road toward Purang, also known as Taklakot. This drive marks the first experience of the Tibetan plateau, with vast open landscapes, high-altitude winds, and a distinct cultural environment. Upon arrival, pilgrims check into the hotel and rest to aid acclimatization.

Distance 78 km drive to Lake Mansarovar and approximately 70 km parikrama by eco bus
Altitude Around 4,500 meters above sea level
Climate Windy and cold conditions
Stay Dormitory-style accommodation with 5–6 pilgrims per room and basic outdoor toilets

Today’s journey leads pilgrims to the sacred Lake Mansarovar, covering approximately 78 kilometers through open highland terrain. Upon reaching the Mansarovar region, the group transfers to an eco-friendly bus for the initial portion of the lake circumambulation. This controlled movement helps preserve the fragile environment while allowing pilgrims to experience the spiritual presence of the lake.

The remainder of the day is spent near the lake, allowing time for quiet reflection, prayer, and adjustment to the high altitude. Accommodation is arranged in simple dormitory-style housing, reflecting the remote nature of the location and the traditional pilgrimage experience.

Distance Approximately 30 km drive to Darchen
Altitude Around 4,500 meters above sea level
Climate Cold and windy, with temperatures dropping below 0°C at night
Stay Hotel Formont or similar (Twin sharing)

The day begins with continued parikrama around the holy Lake Mansarovar. Pilgrims stop at designated locations to perform pooja, offer prayers, and spend time in meditation amidst the serene surroundings. The route also passes by Rakshas Tal (Demon Lake), a site associated with ancient legends, where Ravana is believed to have performed penance to Lord Shiva.

In the afternoon, the journey proceeds toward Darchen, the base town for the Mount Kailash Parikrama. The gradual drive allows pilgrims to rest while transitioning toward the next phase of the yatra.

Distance Approximately 1-hour drive to Yama Dwar | 5–6 hours trek or horseback ride
Altitude Around 4,900 meters (Diraphuk
Climate Cold and windy, with sub-zero temperatures at night
Stay Shared accommodation with common bathroom facilities

After breakfast, pilgrims begin the most sacred segment of the journey — the Mount Kailash Parikrama. A short drive brings the group to Yama Dwar (also known as Tarboche), the traditional starting point of the trek. Horses and porters, if arranged in advance, are assigned here.

From Yama Dwar, pilgrims commence the trek toward Diraphuk, walking through dramatic landscapes marked by prayer flags, rocky trails, and distant views of Mount Kailash. Pilgrims who choose not to undertake the parikrama remain in Darchen under separate arrangements.

Note:
Pilgrims staying back in Darchen will be shifted to an alternate hotel at no extra cost. Those wishing to remain at the same hotel will need to pay an additional 200 Yuan per person per night.

Distance Approximately 22 km trek via Dolma-La Pass
Altitude Dolma-La Pass: Around 5,610 meters | Zuthulphuk: Around 4,790 meters
Climate Cold and windy, with temperatures below 0°C at night
Stay Shared accommodation with common bathroom facilities

This is the most demanding and spiritually significant day of the parikrama. Pilgrims ascend gradually toward the Dolma-La Pass, the highest point of the trek. At the summit, devotees offer prayers and pause briefly to absorb the powerful spiritual atmosphere. From the pass, the trail descends past the sacred Lake Gauri Kunda before continuing toward Zuthulphuk.

The descent, while less steep, still requires careful footing due to terrain and altitude. Arrival at Zuthulphuk marks the completion of the most challenging phase of the journey.

Distance Approximately 3-hour trek followed by road and air transfers

After breakfast, pilgrims undertake a short trek to Chongdo, the concluding point of the Mount Kailash Parikrama. Vehicles await here to transport the group back to Darchen, where they reunite with pilgrims who did not participate in the trek.

Following lunch at Darchen, the journey continues by road to Taklakot or Hilsa. Depending on weather and operational conditions, pilgrims then board a flight back to Simikot, marking the exit from the Tibetan region.

Distance Approximately 45-minute flight followed by a 4-hour road journey

After breakfast, pilgrims depart from their overnight halt location. The group flies from Simikot to Nepalgunj and then continues by road toward Lucknow. This final leg brings the pilgrimage to its conclusion, with participants returning home carrying spiritual memories of the Kailash–Mansarovar Yatra.
